When should I change my car brake pads?

Of all the important parts of your vehicle, brake pads are one of the most important. They are a crucial part of your car’s braking system, and they work by converting your car’s kinetic energy to thermal energy using friction. Your brake pads should be checked as regularly for wear and tear as any other part of your car.
Most people, however, don’t know how regularly they should check their brake pads, as well as when to replace them. As brake pads which are worn out can affect the ability of your brakes to slow your vehicle, it is very dangerous to wait too long before replacing them.
Luckily for you, it is usually quite easy to tell if your brake pads need replacing. Most disc brakes on vehicles come with a part known as a wear indicator, and it is this that will let you know that your car brake pads are in danger of wearing out.
The way the wear indicator works is by contracting the brake rotor when the pad material reaches a certain level of wear. If the wear indicator is grinding against the rotor, you will hear a noticeable squealing noise when you apply your brakes. This is the sound that tells you that your brake pads need replacing and your brakes may need a check-up.
You should always go to a registered car garage to get your brake pads looked at and replaced, unless of course you are a trained automobile mechanic. Provided you know what features to look out for, you can buy your own brake pads online and get your mechanic to fit them.
When you look online, choose a website specialising in vehicle brake pads and look for brands that are well known and respected. For example, you should look for EBC brake pads or similar. Compare prices for the best deal, then go ahead and order your new car brake pads.
